7 Reasons Why Braces Suck ๐Ÿ˜ซ (i speak from experience)

1Alright, I trust you. And I’ve never told this to anybody. But I trust you with this secret.

Ready for it? *deep breaths in and out*

I, Ayesha, had braces once upon a long, long, time ago.

AND THERE YOU HAVE IT FOLKS. It’s something only a handful of people know about me. And I’ talking only seven to eight people.

You may be asking yourselves, “How did Ayesha manage to keep this a secret for so many years?” Well let’s just say, you don’t really get to socialize a lot when you’re homeschooling in Saudi Arabia.

AND NOW OVER TWO HUNDRED PEOPLE KNOW!! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ฑ WHAT HAVE I DONE?!?!?!?!

Anyways, here are some of the worst parts about having braces.

1. No More Biting Apples For This Princess (or anything hard for that matter)

That’s right. Biting into apples was a HUGE no-no for me. In fact, anything too hard risked breaking the glue off of my teeth. So apart from, apples, there were no nuts of any kind, no popcorn kernels, and no hard candy!

I once was munching on a healthy snack of nuts when I felt my braces snap off the back of my teeth! It was so embarrassing when my dentist say it, even after SHE WARNED me not to eat hard things.

2. Cutting the Inside of Your Mouth

This was awful. Every month when you got your braces re-adjusted, they metal wire would cut the inside of my mouth. Even though the cutting only happened during the first few days of every month, the pain and cuts take time to heal! You’re given some wax to cover the metal parts of the braces, but sadly, it doesn’t make your sores heal quicker! ๐Ÿ˜ญ

3. Getting Food Stuck In Your Braces

img_7399-1

YUCK! This just makes me nauseated. I would find food from hours after a meal stuck in my braces. ๐Ÿคข

The worst culprit? Peanut butter sandwiches! These things were so sticky and mushy and just ew ew ew! In fact, stay away from all sorts of bread in general! Believe my girl, finding chewed up food from hours ago, covered in saliva, is not cute. ๐Ÿคฎ๐Ÿคฎ๐Ÿคฎ

4. Tightening Your Braces ๐Ÿ˜ซ๐Ÿ˜ซ

img_7406

This was hands down, THE MOST PAINFUL THING I HAVE, AND EVER WILL EXPERIENCE. I would rather co through childbirth and labor 100 different times than feel the pain I felt when I got my braces tightened.

I would literally need to take painkillers because my mouth would be throbbing in pain. Sometimes, the pain from my mouth would magically diffuse into my head, resulting in the worst headaches imaginable. I couldn’t eat solid foods for days after either. The pain I felt afterwards was so intense, that words cannot even describe it. No word exists that could describe the intensity of the pain I felt. Even Leonardo DiCaprio can’t reenact it.

5. Wearing Rubber Bands

So apparently, not everyone has to do this…? Basically, they are these minuscule rubber bands that you hook onto your braces in order to align your teeth. These hurt too.

When I first was told I had to wear them, I had to spend an hour trying to stretch them onto my braces. These bands are SMALL. As small as the the ‘O’ key on your keyboard. And I stretched this over my top and bottom teeth to form one huge rectangle.

After you put these in, say hasta la vista to talking, smiling, and movement involving your mouth!

6. Smiling ๐Ÿ˜

img_7407

Kanye West is just perfect when describing this. You’d smile because you were genuinely having a great time, then suddenly remember you have braces and hide those teeth away! Don’t worry though, life is too short not to smile, so don’t be insecure about your braces! ๐Ÿ˜

Just know we all still feel you.

7. Retainers

When was the last time I wore my retainers? I decline to comment. ๐Ÿ˜ถ๐Ÿ˜ถ๐Ÿ˜ถ๐Ÿ˜ถ

It’s been well over a year and I haven’t put this gross “armor for you teeth” in my mouth. They’re clear, make it hard to pronounce some letters, and just overall suck.

The worst is when you’re waking up and you take them out, only for a huge trail of saliva to fall into your hands as well. TMI, I’m sorry, but it’s absolutely necessary!

And there you have it my folks! Why braces permanently scarred me hehe. In all seriousness however, if you’ve been one of the unlucky ones to have braces, or have ever had them, just know that at the end of it all, you’ll have a beautiful smile and pearly white teeth! And even if you don’t want them, you’re smile is just as gorgeous!!

You are never fully dressed without a smile!

your fave (you just donโ€™t know it yet),

  1. Oh. My. Girl, I relate so bad!! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ I had braces for the longest time (like 2.5 years or a bit more), and I only took them off at the end of 2018! I totally understand all of this – especially the tightening your braces bit *shudders*. There’s also when your wire sticks out it starts scratching your teeth!

  6. So, so relatable. I have also had braces, a long time ago. And I was nodding along to everything that you had written. The pain is unbearable, especially after tightening. The awkwardness when you find a smiling photo of yourself is just inexplicable.

    1. I’m so happy you found this relatable!! I wasn’t sure if I was just being dramatic, or whether the struggle of braces was genuine hahah!! ๐Ÿ˜‚Luckily, I have little to no pictures of me during that awkward time phew ๐Ÿ˜“

  7. Yeah, braces were not my favorite. I remember that digging into soft parts of the mouth and having to constantly clean the food I could eat out of them. I also managed to have my rubber bands break or just simply ping straight out of my mouth several times. ๐Ÿ˜–๐Ÿ˜ฃ I’m very glad to have that part of my life over with!

    1. This comment was SO RELATABLE! Cleaning food out was gross, and the cutting on the inside of my mouth was awful. But the rubber bands breaking and sometimes flinging out were the most annoying and infuriating things ever! ๐Ÿ˜ค๐Ÿ˜ค I’m super glad we’ve both moved on from those traumatic experiences! ๐Ÿ˜‚

  8. I’ve never had braces but I pretty much have heard all of your same complaints from friends who has braces.
In school we used to play with the elastic bands on the braces. We would try and put it between out teeth so as to feel like the kids who had braces. (It was a weird time)
I have a friend who now is wearing a new form of braces, nothing is glued to her teeth, she wears these translucent type thin retainers and her teeth have straightened dramatically in just a few months. No idea what it’s called or how much it costs but you don’t see the magic happening.

    1. My siblings did the same thing with the rubber bands!! So hilarious!! ๐Ÿ˜‚ I’ve heard rave reviews of those clear retainer like thingys! My close friend wears them (mind you, she loses them a lot too haha). They look too painful for me though! ๐Ÿ˜›

  9. Ok. I haven’t read a more relatable post lately!!! I have my braces on for 2 years now! I was supposed to get rid of them last month, but thanks to corona, I’m stuck with them for a bit longer now ๐Ÿ˜ฆ
And I’ve experienced each and everything you’ve described above (except ofcourse the retainers)

  11. I heard of it from my friends, it’s really a painful experience one should go through. My friends had cried out of pain after getting it tightened, they even have taken leaves to take rest and cry alone. For something called a beautiful smile, some of them had to undergo this. Nicely done, the way you delivered the contents are entertaining also.โœจ๐Ÿ‘Œ nice choice of GIFโœจ๐Ÿ˜‰ Have a wonderful day โœจ๐Ÿ’

  12. One of my best friends had to deal with this issue, Infact her whole family had this problem, she actually made it worse by putting it on again and off again for years but then finally she dealt with it properly and now she has a pretty smile. So I have some idea regarding this. She wasn’t even able to talk to me comfortably and sounded funny :D. AGAIN!! Love your writing style <3.

I never had to wear bands, thankfully and only have to wear my retainer at night. :))
