Alright, I trust you. And I’ve never told this to anybody. But I trust you with this secret.
Ready for it? *deep breaths in and out*
I, Ayesha, had braces once upon a long, long, time ago.
AND THERE YOU HAVE IT FOLKS. It’s something only a handful of people know about me. And I’ talking only seven to eight people.
You may be asking yourselves, “How did Ayesha manage to keep this a secret for so many years?” Well let’s just say, you don’t really get to socialize a lot when you’re homeschooling in Saudi Arabia.
AND NOW OVER TWO HUNDRED PEOPLE KNOW!! 😱😱 WHAT HAVE I DONE?!?!?!?!
Anyways, here are some of the worst parts about having braces.
1. No More Biting Apples For This Princess (or anything hard for that matter)
That’s right. Biting into apples was a HUGE no-no for me. In fact, anything too hard risked breaking the glue off of my teeth. So apart from, apples, there were no nuts of any kind, no popcorn kernels, and no hard candy!
I once was munching on a healthy snack of nuts when I felt my braces snap off the back of my teeth! It was so embarrassing when my dentist say it, even after SHE WARNED me not to eat hard things.
2. Cutting the Inside of Your Mouth
This was awful. Every month when you got your braces re-adjusted, they metal wire would cut the inside of my mouth. Even though the cutting only happened during the first few days of every month, the pain and cuts take time to heal! You’re given some wax to cover the metal parts of the braces, but sadly, it doesn’t make your sores heal quicker! 😭
3. Getting Food Stuck In Your Braces
YUCK! This just makes me nauseated. I would find food from hours after a meal stuck in my braces. 🤢
The worst culprit? Peanut butter sandwiches! These things were so sticky and mushy and just ew ew ew! In fact, stay away from all sorts of bread in general! Believe my girl, finding chewed up food from hours ago, covered in saliva, is not cute. 🤮🤮🤮
4. Tightening Your Braces 😫😫
This was hands down, THE MOST PAINFUL THING I HAVE, AND EVER WILL EXPERIENCE. I would rather co through childbirth and labor 100 different times than feel the pain I felt when I got my braces tightened.
I would literally need to take painkillers because my mouth would be throbbing in pain. Sometimes, the pain from my mouth would magically diffuse into my head, resulting in the worst headaches imaginable. I couldn’t eat solid foods for days after either. The pain I felt afterwards was so intense, that words cannot even describe it. No word exists that could describe the intensity of the pain I felt. Even Leonardo DiCaprio can’t reenact it.
5. Wearing Rubber Bands
So apparently, not everyone has to do this…? Basically, they are these minuscule rubber bands that you hook onto your braces in order to align your teeth. These hurt too.
When I first was told I had to wear them, I had to spend an hour trying to stretch them onto my braces. These bands are SMALL. As small as the the ‘O’ key on your keyboard. And I stretched this over my top and bottom teeth to form one huge rectangle.
After you put these in, say hasta la vista to talking, smiling, and movement involving your mouth!
6. Smiling 😁
Kanye West is just perfect when describing this. You’d smile because you were genuinely having a great time, then suddenly remember you have braces and hide those teeth away! Don’t worry though, life is too short not to smile, so don’t be insecure about your braces! 😁
Just know we all still feel you.
When was the last time I wore my retainers? I decline to comment. 😶😶😶😶
It’s been well over a year and I haven’t put this gross “armor for you teeth” in my mouth. They’re clear, make it hard to pronounce some letters, and just overall suck.
The worst is when you’re waking up and you take them out, only for a huge trail of saliva to fall into your hands as well. TMI, I’m sorry, but it’s absolutely necessary!
And there you have it my folks! Why braces permanently scarred me hehe. In all seriousness however, if you’ve been one of the unlucky ones to have braces, or have ever had them, just know that at the end of it all, you’ll have a beautiful smile and pearly white teeth! And even if you don’t want them, you’re smile is just as gorgeous!!
You are never fully dressed without a smile!
